Bobby had gone out for a walk, so I had the place to myself. I trudged to the kitchen and poured a glass of water, downed it, then poured another. I prayed Jesse was fit to climb the trail again and quickly. I Googled Deer Mountain trail, which was popular among visitors, so maybe there were too many people on the trail for Alex to do anything rash. The summit stood at 10,000 feet; the climb was around three miles one way.

My guess was Alex had already reached the summit. What would he do next, sit on a boulder and pray? Or?

I called Jesse and he sounded out of breath.

“Does Alex have a burner phone?”

“Burner? I don’t know. He has a phone.”

“He left his back at the rectory, so give me the number he called you on? Can you do it without stopping?”

“Shit, Hank, I’m not thirty anymore. Hold on.”

He repeated the number twice and I entered it into my phone. “Okay, where are you?”

“How the fuck do I know? I passed where I left him, that’s all I can tell you. There’s an overlook I remember seeing.”

“Don’t stop.”

“Hank, just in case something goes wrong, Alex told me he saw Conor running just below the crime scene. He thinks Conor killed the woman. He wouldn’t elaborate, but I don’t believe that’s the only thing Alex has been holding back.”

Jesse disconnected again leaving me unsettled. I was right and wrong, but I needed Alex to elaborate, and called him. I wasn’t surprised when he didn’t answer, so I called Emily.

“Alex is probably using a burner phone, but maybe if he sees your number come in, he’ll pick up. I desperately need to talk to him. I’m texting his number. You’re my only chance of reaching him at this point. And please call me either way.”

I couldn’t remember how many times I paced back and forth on Bobby’s living room black and white rug, waiting. Then Emily called, sounding desperate.

“Alex answered the phone! He thanked me for calling and told me he loved me and was grateful for our talks. I begged him to return to the hotel so we could continue our wonderful chats. I told him I needed him and asked him not to do anything impulsive.” Then she cried. “Hank, Alex wouldn’t say anything. I’m so frightened.”

I stood frozen and swallowed hard. “Is there anything you can tell Alex that might make him change his mind about what I’m afraid he’ll do?”

“I really don’t know, but I’ll try again,” she said, and disconnected.

I called Jesse.

“You’re killing me. I’m almost at the summit. There are hikers all over the place, but I don’t see Alex.”

“If you find him, use force if necessary. We want him back alive.”

“I can hardly breathe.”

I disconnected and called the monsignor. “We know where Alex is. Our friend is climbing the trail to get him down.”

“Climbing?”

“Alex is on a hiking trail in the Rocky Mountains. Apparently, he wanted to go back and pray.” I couldn’t think of another explanation.
